A Nanowar of Steel song becomes the perfect metaphor for understanding what is happening in Gaza, and why I can’t sleep at night any more.
A few days ago I was listening to “Gabonzo Robot” by Nanowar of Steel. For those who don’t know them, they’re Italian geniuses of parody metal who have turned irony into a musical art form. The song, from the album “Italian Folk Metal”, is a power metal anthem dedicated to a robot, the hero of an imaginary anime series. Nothing special, if it weren’t for one line the band uses to describe their “hero”: “The only superhero that always wins because he fights against the weak and the children”.
I laughed. Then I stopped laughing.
Because that line, said as a joke about an imaginary robot fighting non-existent enemies, describes with surgical precision what has been happening in Gaza for more than a year and nine months. And there’s nothing left to laugh about.
Gabonzo Robot is the invincible one who only wins against the weak and the children. Israel is the fifth-largest military power in the world, exterminating a population that has been under siege for 18 years, killing 17,492 confirmed children.
Reality has outdone satire, and this article is my desperate attempt to process a situation that is costing me my sleep and my faith in humanity.
§When Numbers Stop Being Numbers
Before carrying on with the robot metaphors, let’s do the maths. The real maths. The kind that should have all of us on our feet screaming, but that instead we read in the papers between a washing powder advert and a piece on the new iPhone.
Since 7 October 2023:
- 62,614 Palestinians dead. Think about that number. It’s more than the population of Piacenza. Wiped out.
- 17,492 children killed. Seventeen thousand. Not 17, not 170. Seventeen thousand.
- 125,000 wounded. If it were an Italian city, it would be the size of Reggio Emilia. Every single one wounded.
- 1.9 million displaced out of 2.3 million inhabitants. 90% of the population.
These aren’t war numbers. They’re numbers of systematic extermination.
And on the other side? 1,139 Israelis dead in the 7 October attack. Every human life matters, every death is a tragedy, but the ratio is 1 to 55. One to fifty-five. It’s as if for every person who hit you, you killed another 54. And kept going. For a year and three months.
What do you call that, if not genocide?
§Democracy and its fascists
But who’s behind this massacre? Who are the directors of this bloodbath that has put any Gabonzo Robot algorithm to shame?
Welcome to the Israeli government of 2023-2024, a collection of fascists that would make even Gabonzo blush at their efficiency in “fighting against the weak and the children”.
Benjamin Netanyahu: Our leading man, a washed-up politician who sold his soul to the fascists to stay in power and dodge his corruption trials. Yes, you read that right: like Berlusconi, but with more civilian deaths on his conscience. Netanyahu needed a solid majority to shield himself from his legal troubles, and to get it he made a pact with the devil.
Itamar Ben-Gvir: Minister of National Security, former leader of the Kach movement - classified as a terrorist organisation by the United States, the EU and Israel itself until 2022. Ben-Gvir was convicted of incitement to racism and support for terrorism. Now he’s a minister. It’s as if Italy appointed a former leader of Forza Nuova as Interior Minister. Absurd? Welcome to Israel 2024.
Bezalel Smotrich: Finance Minister and in charge of the settlements. He has publicly declared that “there is no such thing as a Palestinian people” and that Gaza should be “wiped off the face of the earth”. I’m not paraphrasing. Those are literally his words.
These aren’t politicians. They’re ideological fascists using the tragedy of 7 October to fulfil their sick dream: the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Netanyahu handed them the keys to the Kingdom in exchange for his political survival, and now Gaza is paying the price.
The paradox? Israel presents itself as “the only democracy in the Middle East” while its government is full of people who were considered terrorists 20 years ago. It’s as if Gabonzo Robot posed as a champion of justice while massacring orphanages.
§The documented genocide
Now that we’ve identified the directors, let’s look at what they’ve produced. And here things get really grim, because what is happening in Gaza is not “war”. It’s industrial genocide, documented in real time by the most respected international organisations in the world.
Human Rights Watch - March 2024: “Crimes against humanity and acts of genocide”. They analysed 280+ videos and gathered 212 first-hand testimonies.
Amnesty International - December 2024: “You Feel Like You Are Subhuman” - a 300-page report that concludes: Israel is committing genocide. They analysed over 100 statements by Israeli officials showing “genocidal intent”.
Médecins Sans Frontières: “What our teams have witnessed is consistent with descriptions of genocide”. MSF, which has been working in wars for 50 years, says Gaza is different. It’s worse.
And the International Court of Justice? On 26 January 2024 it ruled that the genocide allegations are “plausible” and ordered Israel to stop. Israel responded by stepping up the bombing.
When the three most respected human rights organisations in the world, together with the International Court of Justice, all say the same thing, maybe it’s worth listening.
But the person who has documented all of this with the greatest precision is Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories. Her reports are a masterpiece of documentation and a punch in the gut for anyone who still has a shred of conscience.
“Anatomy of a Genocide” (March 2024): Albanese identifies three genocidal acts under the 1948 Convention:
- Killing members of the group
- Causing serious bodily or mental harm
- Inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction
All three are documented in Gaza. Systematically. Daily.
“From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide” (June 2025): The most devastating report. Albanese documents how 48 international corporations (Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon) are profiting from the extermination. The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange rose by 213% during the genocide.
Yes, you read that right. They’re making money off genocide. Gabonzo Robot at least didn’t invoice for children’s corpses.
The response? The United States imposed sanctions on Albanese. Not on those committing genocide, but on the person documenting it. It’s like sanctioning the sports commentator instead of the team that’s doping.
§The death factory
Now let’s get into the details of this “military operation” that has more in common with Gabonzo Robot than with any sensible military strategy.
88% of school buildings damaged or destroyed. Gabonzo Robot destroying schools to win against the children.
36 hospitals: Only 19 partially operational. The rest bombed. Gabonzo Robot destroying hospitals to win against the sick.
284 UNRWA staff members killed. UNRWA is the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Gabonzo Robot killing those who help the weak.
686 documented attacks on healthcare facilities. Not random attacks. Targeted attacks. Gabonzo Robot picking his defenceless targets with precision.
And the icing on the cake? Israel has passed laws to ban UNRWA from the occupied territories. It’s as if Gabonzo Robot, after destroying the orphanages, passed a law banning their reconstruction.
§The West looking the other way
But the thing that disgusts me most, the thing that keeps me awake at night, isn’t just what’s happening in Gaza. It’s how the “civilised” West is reacting.
United Nations: 158 countries vote for a ceasefire. The United States vetoes it. For the fourth time. It’s as if 158 people said “stop Gabonzo Robot” and one shouted “NO, LET HIM CARRY ON!”.
European Union: Divided. Germany, which ought to have learnt something about the extermination industry, backs Israel. The irony is so bitter it physically hurts.
Italy: Our government of “patriots”, always banging on about “Christian values”, sells weapons to people who massacre children. Twenty-seven million euros’ worth of arms. Gabonzo Robot, made in Italy.
§The endless siege
But Gaza didn’t start on 7 October 2023. Gaza has been a laboratory of human suffering for 18 years.
Since 2007, Israel has turned Gaza into what the United Nations calls “the largest open-air prison in the world”:
- 62% of the population needed food assistance even before 7 October
- 47% unemployment
- 96% of the water undrinkable
- 4 hours of electricity a day
Eighteen years of siege. Eighteen years of systematic strangulation. Eighteen years of preparation for what was to come.
Gabonzo Robot starving his enemies before killing them. What kind of hero is that?
§“Human shields”
And then there’s the narrative. The one that turns my stomach every time I hear it.
“Gaza uses children as human shields.”
Listen, you piece of shit who came up with this excuse: Gaza has the population density of Manhattan. It’s not as if you can hide a rocket launcher in the Tuscan countryside. It’s all city, all houses, all civilian life.
And even if it were true, even if Hamas had used every single child in Gaza as a “human shield”, the response of the “most moral army in the world” was to kill the children anyway.
17,492 children. I’m repeating it because it’s a number that needs to stay burnt onto your retinas. If Hamas used them as shields, Israel shot through the shields. All of them. Seventeen thousand four hundred and ninety-two times.
Gabonzo Robot at least didn’t have the “human shields” excuse. He was honest: he fought against the weak and the children because it was easier.
§The economy of genocide
But the real filth, the thing that makes me lose faith in humanity, is finding out who’s making money from it.
Francesca Albanese’s report “From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide” is a detailed map of how capitalism has monetised extermination:
Microsoft: Provides cloud services to the Israeli army. Their servers process the data that selects the targets to bomb.
Alphabet (Google): Project Nimbus - a 1.2 billion contract to supply AI to the Israeli army. Artificial intelligence choosing who gets to die.
Amazon: AWS provides the cloud infrastructure for Israeli military intelligence.
Tel Aviv Stock Exchange: +213% during the genocide. More dead Palestinians = more profit for shareholders.
It’s the apotheosis of capitalism: turning the death industry into a business plan. Gabonzo Robot was an amateur; these people have made genocide a sustainable business model.
§The failed truce
And then, just so we don’t miss out on anything, we got the pantomime of the “truce”.
19 January - 18 March 2025: Two months’ pause in the massacre. 110 Israeli hostages released in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.
Notice the numbers? Here too the ratio is 1 to 2. One Israeli is worth two Palestinians. Even in a prisoner exchange, a Palestinian life is worth half.
And on 18 March? Israel resumed the bombing. End of the truce. Why? Because they had to “eliminate Hamas once and for all”.
Twenty-one months later, Hamas is still there. 62,614 Palestinian dead later, Hamas is still there. But hey, at least Gabonzo Robot has won another battle against the children of Gaza.
§The silence of the “good guys”
But the thing that hurts me most, the thing that wakes me up at night, isn’t even the wickedness of the wicked. It’s the silence of the “good guys”.
Where are the “progressive” politicians? Where are the intellectuals who love the sound of “never again”? Where are the journalists who are supposed to tell the truth?
Silence.
Silence while 17,492 children are slaughtered. Silence while three international organisations document genocide. Silence while the International Court of Justice says “stop”.
And here there’s a paradox that destroys my soul: Liliana Segre. Ninety years old, Auschwitz survivor, partisan, anti-fascist her whole life. A woman who experienced first-hand what it means to be the victim of genocide, who has devoted her life to saying “never again”.
And faced with the genocide in Gaza? Silence. Or worse: justifications.
Liliana Segre, who should recognise the signs of genocide better than anyone, cannot bring herself to condemn what is happening to the Palestinians. It’s as if a former Italian partisan couldn’t recognise fascism when it came back to power.
The paradox of selective memory: we remember our own genocide, but we can’t see other people’s. Even when the numbers, the methods, the ideology are identical.
And here we get to the point nobody wants to face: the Palestinian resistance is partisan resistance. Like the Italian one of ‘43-‘45.
Same ingredients: fascists in government, a civilian population under attack, armed resistance fighting for its own land and its own people. But when it was Italians against Nazi-fascists, we called them “heroes of the Resistance”. When it’s Palestinians against Zio-fascists, we call them “terrorists”.
The Italian Republic is built on the legitimacy of the anti-fascist partisan struggle. But the partisans of Gaza? Those are “terrorists”.
It’s the most nauseating hypocrisy of recent History.
The silence that makes you complicit. The silence that lets Gabonzo Robot keep winning against the weak and the children.
§Rage and helplessness
And then there’s the rage. My rage. The one eating me alive as I write this article.
I’m angry about what’s happening in Gaza. I’m angry about the West’s indifference. I’m angry about the politicians looking the other way. I’m angry about the media normalising genocide.
But above all, I’m angry with myself. Because here I am writing on a blog read by three men and a dog while 17,492 children have died and more are dying right now.
What will this article change? Nothing. Gabonzo Robot will keep winning against the weak and the children, and I’ll keep feeling helpless in front of a death machine I can’t stop, not even with all my rage.
And this brings us to the paradox that made me write this article.
Nanowar of Steel invented Gabonzo Robot as a parody of the invincible hero who is actually a coward that only wins against the weak. It was satire. It was meant to be funny.
But reality has outdone fiction. There really is a “hero” who only wins against the weak and the children. It’s not an imaginary robot, it’s a state with the fifth-largest military in the world massacring a besieged population.
Satire has become prophecy. The paradox has become reality. And it’s not funny to anyone any more.
We live in the information age. Everything is documented, everything is filmed, everything is shared. Israel’s war crimes are broadcast via live stream. The genocide has a hashtag.
And nothing changes.
#FreePalestine trending while children die. #GenocideInGaza going viral while hospitals are bombed. #CeasefireNow shared millions of times while Israeli fascists plan the next massacre.
We are all digital witnesses to an ongoing genocide, and the only thing we know how to do is share posts and write angry articles on blogs nobody reads.
It’s the helplessness of the digital age: seeing everything, knowing everything, being unable to change anything.
But perhaps the scariest thing is something else: we’re getting used to it.
In the first days after 7 October, every bombing made the news. Every destroyed hospital was a tragedy. Every dead child was a name, a story, a life cut short.
Now? Now they’re numbers. 62,614 dead has become a daily update, like the weather or the stock market. Genocide has become routine.
And this is perhaps Gabonzo Robot’s greatest success: not just winning against the weak and the children, but convincing the world that it’s normal.
So what’s left? After a year and nine months of massacres, after 62,614 dead, after 17,492 children slaughtered, after three international organisations have documented genocide, after the International Court of Justice said “stop”, after all of this…
What the fuck is left?
Rage is left. Rage that becomes fuel to keep talking, writing, documenting. Even if it’s no use.
Sadness is left. A cosmic sadness for a human species that in 2025 can still exterminate children and call it “defence”.
Helplessness is left. The helplessness of being on the other side of the world while all of this happens, unable to do anything but watch and bear witness.
But there’s also one thing left that Gabonzo Robot can’t defeat: memory.
17,492 children.
This number must remain. It must be tattooed on the collective memory of humanity. It must be the number we remember when someone tries to tell us that Israel is “the only democracy in the Middle East”.
62,614 Palestinians dead.
This number must be our daily reminder of what “the right to defend itself” means when it’s exercised by the fifth-largest military power in the world against a besieged population.
1 to 55.
This ratio must be the answer to anyone who talks about “proportionality” and “self-defence”.
Gabonzo Robot can win every battle against the weak and the children. But he can’t win against the memory of those who bear witness. He can’t erase the numbers, the names, the stories.
In the end, when you switch off the irony, when you put the robot metaphors aside, when you stop searching for absurd comparisons to process the impossible, only one thing is left: the pain.
The pain for 17,492 children who will never grow up. The pain for the mothers searching for their children under the rubble. The pain for the fathers who can’t protect their families. The pain for a people who have been waiting 75 years for justice.
And the pain for us, watching all this and unable to stop it.
Gabonzo Robot was a song to laugh at. Gaza is a tragedy to weep over.
But at least, for fuck’s sake, let’s weep.
At least let’s not pretend it’s normal. At least let’s not get used to it. At least let’s remember that every number is a person, every dead child is a future erased, every destroyed family is a piece of humanity slipping away.
And when someone tries to tell us it was “necessary”, that it was “self-defence”, that it was “inevitable”, we will remember the numbers:
17,492 children. 62,614 dead. 1 to 55.
And we will say: No. This wasn’t normal. This was genocide.
And if that makes us “antisemites”, “terrorists”, “enemies of Israel”, so be it.
We’d rather be on the wrong side of History than on the right side of genocide.
Gabonzo Robot always wins against the weak and the children.
But history, the real one, is written by us.
“I hate the indifferent. I believe that living means taking sides. Whoever truly lives cannot help being a citizen and a partisan. Indifference is apathy, it is parasitism, it is cowardice, it is not life. That is why I hate the indifferent.
Indifference is the dead weight of history. Indifference operates powerfully in history. It operates passively, but it operates. It is fate; it is that which cannot be counted on; it is that which upsets programmes, which overturns the best-laid plans; it is the brute matter that chokes intelligence. What happens, the evil that befalls everyone, happens because the mass of men abdicate their will, allow laws to be promulgated that only revolt will be able to repeal, allow men to rise to power whom only a mutiny will be able to overthrow.”
Antonio Gramsci, Indifferenti (La città futura, 11 February 1917)
Alessandro “kLeZ” Accardo, 14 July 2025
In memory of the 17,492 children Gabonzo Robot defeated in Gaza.
May they not have died in vain.
§PS: Don’t Believe Me, Check for Yourselves
Everything I’ve written in this article may seem excessive, emotional, one-sided. And it is. But every single figure I’ve quoted can be verified through official sources and recognised international organisations.
Don’t believe me, I’m nobody. I’m just a pissed-off IT guy writing on a blog nobody reads. But the figures I’ve quoted come from:
§Human Rights Organisations
- Human Rights Watch - “Israeli Forces’ Conduct in Gaza”
- Amnesty International - “You Feel Like You Are Subhuman: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza”
- Médecins Sans Frontières - “Gaza genocide: What is happening in Gaza?”
§United Nations and International Institutions
- Francesca Albanese - UN Special Rapporteur - Official reports
- UN News - “Rights expert finds ‘reasonable grounds’ genocide is being committed in Gaza”
- UNRWA - Situation Reports
- UNICEF - “Children in Gaza need life-saving support”
§Journalistic Sources and Monitoring
- Al Jazeera - Live tracker with updated figures
- Associated Press - US sanctions against Francesca Albanese
- Save the Children - Figures on children killed
§Academic and Institutional Sources
- Encyclopedia Britannica - “Israel-Hamas War”
- Wikipedia - Gaza genocide (with verifiable sources)
My advice? Read the sources. Cross-check the figures. Verify everything. Don’t settle for my rage or for anyone else’s propaganda.
Ask yourselves one simple question: If three of the most respected human rights organisations in the world (HRW, Amnesty, MSF) say the same thing, if the International Court of Justice finds the allegations “plausible”, if the UN Special Rapporteur documents everything in detail… maybe, just maybe, it isn’t all “antisemitic” propaganda.
Maybe it’s simply the truth.
An uncomfortable truth, one that hurts, one that forces you to take a stand. But the truth all the same.
And if, after reading the sources, you reach the same conclusions I did, then maybe it’s time to do what our partisan grandparents did: choose which side you’re on.
Because in 2025, faced with a documented genocide, neutrality means complicity.
#FreePalestine #CeasefireNow #Gaza
Not out of hatred for anyone, but out of love for humanity.
